Italy — A Dessert Tour of a Faraway Location

Italy is a country that’s rich with culture, history, art and, of course, food. Take a culinary journey with us as we explore several of the best desserts to come out of Italy and let them serve as inspiration for you during this new year.

Rum Babas / Baba Au Rhum. This small yeast cake is made of eggs, butter and milk, but it takes its decadent flavor from the syrup it’s soaked in. The syrup is usually rum syrup (not necessarily alcoholic) or liquor, and the cake is then filled with whipped cream or authentic Italian pastry cream. Rum babas are typically prepared as individual servings, which makes them perfect for cupcake or muffin baking cups.

Tiramisu. Again, think single-size portions and remember that tiramisu is surprisingly easy to prepare. Sweet ladyfingers are dipped in espresso or coffee and tucked in between mascarpone custard. By refrigerating this luxurious sweet for at least several hours, the flavors are allowed time to properly combine, and the end result is the heavenly Italian dessert we all know and love. Tiramisu means “pick me up,” and it does, indeed.

Mini Zeppoles. Sugared Italian pastries form the basis of this simple dessert. You can use basic yeast dough or make it even easier on yourself and use store-bought pizza dough. Drop into hot oil and fry. While they’re still warm, sprinkle them with confectioner’s sugar or cinnamon — or dip in chocolate or Nutella. Fill with ricotta or custard for a little additional Italian flair. Delizioso!
