With summer in the rearview mirror, it’s a good time to celebrate that iconic experience known as summer camp. Because where else can you practice archery, ride a zip line, sing around a campfire, and enjoy nightly s’mores, all in the same week? And in honor of those nightly s’mores (and other sweet treats for hungry campers), here are our favorite summer camp-inspired desserts.
Baked apples or apple crisp variations: There’s nothing like fresh apples baked over campfire coals, except maybe fresh apples baked in cups in your own oven. Peel and slice apples; place in your favorite variation of our bakeware; and cover with a mixture of butter, brown sugar, quick oats and a dash of cinnamon. For a more aesthetic presentation, slice the apple from top to bottom, without cutting all the way to the bottom, so that it resembles a flower. Add your goodies to the center and bake.
Banana Boats: Apple’s cousin, the potassium-rich banana, serves as the base of this fresh idea. Slice your banana down the middle, but leave it in the peel. Fill with chocolate chips, marshmallows and even nuts or peanut butter. Cook in one of our loaf pans until the marshmallows soften to your liking.
S’mores Adaptations: And the old standby, s’mores, are always a hit. But mix it up by making s’mores indoors, and by concocting s’mores cupcakes, cookie bars or mini pies. You can also mix it up with your ingredients. Add M&Ms, use fudge stripe cookies in lieu of graham crackers, sub in white chocolate for milk chocolate, or pile your banana boat with chocolate chips, mini marshmallows and graham cracker crumbs.
